Series vs. Parallel Battery Connections: What Changes?
Series increases voltage, parallel increases amp-hour capacity and current capability; both require compatible cells and protection.
Quick answer
Connecting matched batteries in series adds voltage while amp-hour capacity stays the same. Connecting them in parallel keeps voltage the same while amp-hour capacity adds. Nominal watt-hours add in either case, but allowable current, BMS architecture, balancing, wiring and fault protection do not scale automatically.
The basic electrical change
Assume four matched 3.2 V, 5 Ah cells:
| Configuration | Nominal voltage | Capacity | Nominal energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4S1P | 12.8 V | 5 Ah | 64 Wh |
| 1S4P | 3.2 V | 20 Ah | 64 Wh |
| 2S2P | 6.4 V | 10 Ah | 64 Wh |
“4S1P” means four cells in series and one parallel string. “2S2P” means two cells in series in each string and two matched strings in parallel.
Series connection
Series increases operating and maximum charge voltage. The charger, BMS, insulation, connector and downstream equipment must match the full series voltage. One weak cell can reach high- or low-voltage cutoff before the rest, so cell matching and balancing matter.
Do not calculate the charger from nominal voltage alone. Use the confirmed maximum charge voltage per cell multiplied by series count, together with the specified charge method.
Parallel connection
Parallel increases nominal amp-hour capacity. In theory, parallel cells share current; in practice, current sharing depends on cell impedance, temperature and symmetric interconnect resistance. Cells should be at closely matched voltage before connection because equalization current can otherwise be very high.
Parallel capacity does not mean every component can carry the multiplied current. Busbars, welds, fuses, BMS, cables and connectors require separate ratings.
Pack safety and serviceability
- Use the same chemistry, model, capacity, age and state of health within a designed group.
- Do not casually series-connect complete packs unless their manufacturer permits it.
- Do not parallel packs with incompatible BMS behavior.
- Provide fault-current protection appropriate to each string and the total bus.
- Validate balancing strategy, sensing layout and connection sequence.
Series/parallel notation is only the electrical skeleton. A procurement-ready pack specification must also define cell model, BMS limits, interconnect, enclosure, connector, charger and environmental requirements.
FAQ
Does series connection increase amp-hours?
No. For matched units, series connection adds voltage while the amp-hour rating remains that of one series string.
Can different-capacity batteries be connected in parallel?
It is generally unsuitable without an engineered architecture. Differences in voltage, state of charge, impedance, age and protection can cause unequal or hazardous currents.
